Title: Creating Magic: 10 Common Sense Leadership Strategies from a Life at Disney
Author: Lee Cockerell
This book is about: This book is about 10 common sense leadership ideas that have been learned after years at Disney and other hotels in the Florida area. Lee Cockerell gives examples of how he has managed his teams at Walt Disney World Resort, how he previously managed other hotels and what set his different tenures apart from those he took over for. He gives 10 easy to do strategies. Each strategy is broken down further into smaller ideas and actionable items.
I loved: I loved the stories that came from implementing the strategies. It made the book feel real, actionable and that every idea doesn’t need to be mastered, but that great leadership can come by following and implementing the ten practical common sense ideas.
Reading this book made me wonder: I wonder how many of these ideas and strategies can be applied to my career. I wonder how many “common sense” ideas that we are already have in action. They are so simple and so regular that this book wouldn’t have much ‘umph’ to it without the stories how the Disney team puts it into action. As straightforward as they are profound, these leadership lessons include:
Everyone is important. Make your people your brand. Burn the free fuel: appreciation, recognition, and encouragement. Give people a purpose, not just a job.
I enjoyed the book and have already recommended my mentors and peers alike to read this.
Overall, the book was: I give the book 4.5 stars out of 5.
